AEC-Q100: What the Qualification Actually Covers
AEC-Q100 is the Automotive Electronics Council's stress-test qualification for integrated circuits. It defines temperature grades and a battery of lifetime stress tests (HTOL, TC, HAST, ESD, latch-up):
- Grade 0: −40 to +150 °C ambient — engine bay, on-diesel, near brakes
- Grade 1: −40 to +125 °C — most underhood-adjacent and powertrain zones
- Grade 2: −40 to +105 °C — body electronics, lighting, interior power
- Grade 3: −40 to +85 °C — cabin, infotainment
- Grade 4: 0 to +70 °C — largely obsolete for vehicles; avoid
Important nuance: AEC-Q100 qualification is necessary but not sufficient. Automotive programs additionally require PPAP documentation, change-notification agreements, and often ISO 26262 functional-safety analysis for anything touching safety-relevant functions.
Zoning the Car: Matching Grade to Location
Over-specifying wastes cost; under-specifying guarantees field failures. Practical mapping: ADAS cameras and radar heads behind the windshield see 85–105 °C; LED headlight drivers exceed 105 °C near the housing; EV traction-inverter gate drivers live at 150 °C-plus and demand grade 0 parts with automotive-qualified packaging. Verify the junction, not the ambient — a 105 °C-rated zone plus self-heating pushes junctions to 125 °C quickly.
When the Automotive Part Is Unavailable
Automotive-grade stock is allocated first to tier-1 contracts; independent repair, industrial retrofits, and volume-constrained programs frequently face 40+ week lead times on qualified parts. Options in practice:
- Licensed equivalents: some manufacturers offer AEC-Q100-qualified second sources — verify full pin and specification compatibility.
- Authorized open-market sourcing: buying from stocking distributors with full traceability (date codes, lot documentation) preserves the qualification chain.
- Redesign to available grades — viable for non-safety zones, never for safety-relevant functions.
Counterfeit Risk Is Highest in Automotive
Exactly because demand outstrips supply, the automotive aftermarket attracts counterfeit and remarked parts. A remarked consumer-grade IC in a grade-0 application is a latent field failure. Buy only from sources offering original packaging, verifiable date codes, and inspection documentation.
