DC-DC Buck vs LDO: When to Use Which (with In-Stock Parts)

Efficiency or quiet? Pick the topology first

A buck (step-down) converter trades switching noise for efficiency; an LDO trades efficiency for a quiet output. The decision usually comes down to the input-output voltage gap and the load current.

When a switching converter wins

If Vin minus Vout is large, or the load exceeds a few hundred milliamps, a switch-mode regulator is the only sensible choice — a linear part would dissipate the difference as heat. The parts below cover the common buck and boost roles.

When an LDO is the better answer

For a small gap (under about 1.5 V) or for analog and RF rails where switching ripple is unacceptable, use an LDO. A common pattern is a buck to bring the bus down, then an LDO to clean the final rail.

See the full power management category for LDO and supervisor parts, or the microcontroller category if you are powering an MCU directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace an LDO with a buck to save heat?

Yes, when the voltage gap is large — a buck removes the heat penalty, but add input/output filtering if the rail feeds sensitive analog circuitry.

Which buck should I use for a 12 V to 5 V, 2 A rail?

An LM2596S-5.0 or a synchronous MP1484-class part both work; choose on thermal budget and board space.

Do you stock adjustable versions?

Yes — LM2596S-ADJ, LM2577T-ADJ and MP1584EN are all in stock.
