The best-selling features of a smart product — the lid that wakes the screen, the earbud case that knows it is open, the appliance that draws exactly 45 W from any USB-C charger — are implemented by components that cost cents. Two categories do most of this quiet work: Hall-effect switches and USB Power Delivery sink controllers. Both are worth understanding at the part level, because both punish sloppy selection in the field.
Hall-Effect Switches: Magnetic Presence Detection
A Hall switch outputs a logic level based on magnetic flux density through the chip. Three families exist, and choosing the wrong one is the classic error:
- Unipolar switches trip on one magnetic pole only — predictable behavior when the magnet's orientation is fixed (door and lid detection with known magnet placement).
- Omnipolar (no-polarity) switches trip on either pole — the forgiving choice when assembly orientation can vary.
- Latches flip on one pole and release on the other — the native interface for rotating magnets in flow meters, fan speed sensing, and positional encoders.
The parameters that decide field behavior are Bop/Brp (operate and release points) and their hysteresis, which prevents chatter at the threshold; supply range (modern parts span roughly 1.65–6 V, covering coin cells and 5 V rails alike); average current (micropower parts run at ~5 µA class — mandatory for battery products); and temperature stability of the trip point. Parts such as the MST (Magnesensor Technology, 美伽) MH series address the stability problem with chopper-stabilized dynamic offset cancellation — the same technique as precision amplifiers — which keeps trip points stable across −40 to +125 °C temperature grades (E and K grades). The series spans omnipolar switches (MH253 class), low-voltage micropower unipolar parts (MH254 class, 5 µA), latches (MH163/MH168 and related), and linear Hall sensors (MH188 class) for analog position measurement, in SOT-23 and TO-92-style packages. Typical applications: TWS earbud case detection, smart-lock state sensing, water-meter and flow sensing, fan and motor position feedback.
USB PD Sink Controllers: Borrowing Power From Anything
A PD sink controller does the opposite of a charger's protocol chip: it negotiates with a USB-C source and requests the voltage the product actually needs, so an appliance, lamp, display, or small tool can run from any compliant adapter. Selection parameters:
- Protocol level: PD 3.0 versus 3.1 (higher fixed voltages), and PPS support for continuously adjustable voltage — the difference between a fixed 9 V design and one that optimizes efficiency across the load range.
- Integration: the smallest parts integrate the negotiation, VBUS control, and protection in a SOT-23-6-class package — ENCHIP (能芯半导体) ECP5701 is a representative PD 3.0/3.1 sink controller of this class, with PPS-capable siblings (ECP5705/5707 family) for adjustable-voltage designs.
- Beyond power draw: the same ecosystem covers PD-based LED lamp dimming control and DC-motor speed control over PD, letting a product's user interface live on the power source itself.
- System honesty: a sink controller only helps if downstream conversion matches the negotiated voltage — check that your buck input range covers the full PPS window you request.
The Sourcing Logic These Two Categories Share
Both categories reward the same discipline: read the threshold specifications (magnetic or protocol), not the headline; verify behavior at your temperature extremes and battery voltage floor; and qualify a second source early, because these parts win designs by availability as much as by datasheet. Both MST's magnetic portfolio and ENCHIP's PD portfolio are strong candidates for exactly that second-source role in consumer and light-industrial products.
