How to Avoid Counterfeit and Recycled ICs: Date Codes, X-Ray and Lab Testing Explained

The problem in one line

When a genuine part is scarce or expensive, someone will print a new label on a cheaper, older or dead die. Counterfeits and refurbished parts cause field failures, warranty claims and, in aerospace and medical systems, real safety risk.

Start with the date code

The date code tells you when the part was made. Reading it correctly — and checking it against the part's production history — catches a surprising share of fraud:

  • A date code that predates the part's introduction is impossible.
  • A date code far older than a part still in volume production deserves a question.
  • Inconsistent date codes across a supposed single lot suggest mixed or recycled goods.

Visual and X-ray inspection

Under magnification and X-ray you can see what a label hides:

  • Blacktopping and re-marking — sanding marks, uneven surface, laser printing that differs from factory style.
  • Die size — X-ray reveals the actual die; a smaller die than the genuine part is a classic counterfeit signature.
  • Lead finish and geometry — re-tinned or re-formed leads on recycled parts.

Laboratory testing

For high-value or safety-critical parts, lab work gives certainty:

  • Curve tracing — verifies basic electrical behaviour.
  • Decapsulation — opens the package to read the real die markings.
  • XRF — checks plating composition for recycled or re-tinned parts.
  • Functional test — the ultimate proof, on the parameters that matter.

Paperwork matters too

Ask for a Certificate of Conformance, a traceable lot/date code and, where needed, third-party test reports. Suppliers who routinely provide these documents are almost always the ones worth keeping.

Building it into your process

  • Buy samples first for any new supplier or unfamiliar lot.
  • For critical parts, budget for X-ray or lab testing — it is cheap compared with a field failure.
  • Keep records of date codes and test results per lot so you can trace a problem later.
  • Prefer suppliers who welcome inspection instead of resisting it.
