The counterfeit component trade tracks the shortage cycle with perfect fidelity — every allocation event triggers a fresh wave of remarked, recycled, and cloned parts into the open market. For anyone sourcing outside franchise distribution, a working inspection discipline is not optional. Here is what actually catches counterfeit parts.
Know the Counterfeit Types
- Remarked: a lower-grade or different part sanded and re-marked as a higher-value one. The most common category by far.
- Recycled/reclaimed: pulled from e-waste boards, cleaned, re-tinned, re-marked. Often functional — until their remaining lifespan expires in your product.
- Cloned: reverse-engineered and manufactured copies, sometimes with real functionality but no original qualification.
- Empty or dummy: packages with no die at all, sold into panic purchases.
Incoming Inspection: The Red Flags
- Surface texture: original surfaces are consistent; sanding leaves micro-scratches visible under 20–40× magnification, often concentrated around the marking area with sharp edges nearby untouched.
- Blacktopping: a uniform black coat applied to hide original marks. Look for coating on the leads, dull or slightly domed surfaces, and laser marks that sit "on top of" rather than etched into the coating.
- Date code and lot code inconsistencies: fonts that differ from the manufacturer's standard, date codes newer than the part's possible production window, mixed date codes within one reel, or missing country-of-origin marks.
- Lead condition: re-tinned leads look too bright and uniform; original solder-dipped leads show a natural meniscus. Bent or resoldered leads betray board reclamation.
- Packaging: reels, tubes, and ESD bags that are generic rather than manufacturer-branded; humidity indicator cards missing or pre-triggered; MSL labels inconsistent with package type.
- Weight and dimensions: deviations from a known-good sample catch die-less packages quickly.
When Visual Inspection Is Not Enough
For high-stakes purchases, escalate to laboratory verification:
- X-ray: reveals die size, bond wire pattern, and lead frame — mismatches against a genuine sample expose remarked or cloned parts instantly.
- Decapsulation: directly identifies the die and its markings; destructive but definitive.
- Electrical testing: DC parametric and functional testing against the datasheet, ideally at temperature extremes.
- XRF / spectroscopy: confirms lead finish composition matches the claimed plating.
Prevention Beats Detection
The cheapest counterfeit test is the one you never need: buy from sources with reputations to lose. Ask suppliers where their stock comes from, demand date-code and lot traceability, and prefer vendors who photograph actual inventory rather than stock images. A supplier who cannot answer "which factory did this come from and show me the paperwork" has already told you everything.
