LED Driver ICs and LED Display Components: Constant Current, Dimming and Displays

Lighting and indication are the parts of a product the user actually looks at, and they are also a common source of field failures when current is not controlled properly. This guide covers the constant-current drivers, addressable LEDs, display drivers and discrete indicators we stock.

1. Constant-current LED driver ICs

These parts regulate LED current directly, which is what you want for stable brightness and long life. Choose linear parts for simple, low-power and low-noise designs; choose switching parts where efficiency or battery life matters.

2. Addressable LEDs

Addressable parts integrate the driver into the LED package and are chained on a single data line, which makes large arrays practical from one microcontroller pin.

3. Display drivers and controllers

For segmented and matrix displays, a dedicated driver handles multiplexing and current control so the microcontroller does not have to.

4. Discrete LED indicators and displays

Sometimes a single indicator is all that is needed. These are the discrete display and indicator parts we stock.

Selection checklist

  • Drive LEDs with constant current, not constant voltage.
  • Choose linear versus switching from the efficiency and noise requirements.
  • Size the driver for the full string voltage at the lowest expected supply.
  • For dimming, prefer PWM at a flicker-free frequency.
  • Confirm the driver or controller is supported by your graphics or display library.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a linear LED driver and a switching LED driver?

A linear LED driver regulates current by dissipating the excess voltage as heat, which is simple and quiet but inefficient when the supply is much higher than the LED string voltage. A switching driver converts the voltage efficiently and is the right choice for higher power or battery-powered designs, at the cost of more components and switching noise to manage.

Why do LEDs need constant current rather than constant voltage?

LED brightness depends on forward current, and the forward voltage varies with temperature, bin and ageing. Driving with a fixed voltage gives unpredictable current and therefore unpredictable brightness and reliability. A constant-current driver holds brightness stable and protects the LED.

How do I dim LEDs without changing colour?

Use pulse-width modulation at a frequency high enough to avoid visible flicker, and keep the LED current amplitude constant so the emitted spectrum does not shift. Analogue dimming by reducing current is simpler but changes the colour point slightly and is less linear at low levels.

What is the difference between WS2812B, SK6812 and WS2811?

WS2812B and SK6812 are addressable LEDs with the driver integrated into the package, controlled over a single data line, with SK6812 variants also offering a separate white channel. WS2811 is a separate driver IC used to drive discrete RGB LEDs, which is useful when you want to choose the LED package yourself.
