Sensors are where your product meets the physical world, and they are also where the widest range of options meets the widest range of opinions. This guide groups the sensors we are asked about most—environmental, motion, distance and current—and the parameters that actually decide each choice.
1. Temperature and humidity
Two numbers decide most of these choices: accuracy over your operating range, and supply current if the product is battery powered.

Selection checklist
- Write down the accuracy you actually need over temperature, not the accuracy of the best part available.
- For battery products, put supply current and duty cycle on the same sheet as accuracy.
- Check the interface you can support: I²C, SPI, 1-Wire or analogue.
- Confirm the package and the mechanical placement—thermal and optical sensors are sensitive to where they sit.
- Validate in the real enclosure; a sensor that performs on the bench can fail once it is sealed in.

Frequently asked questions
Which humidity sensor should I use for a battery-powered product?
Look at the supply current and the measurement duty cycle. Parts such as the SHT30 and AHT20 are popular in battery designs because they draw little and can be polled intermittently. Compare the accuracy you actually need against the power budget before choosing the most precise part available.
Do I need a 6-axis IMU or a simpler accelerometer?
If you only need tilt, orientation or shock detection, a 3-axis accelerometer is enough. Add a gyroscope (6-axis) when you need rotation rate, attitude estimation or motion fusion. Higher-grade IMUs also give you better bias stability and lower noise.
What is the difference between a ToF sensor and an ultrasonic sensor for distance?
Time-of-flight sensors such as the VL53L0X give fast, millimetre-resolution readings at short range and are unaffected by acoustic noise, which makes them good for gesture and proximity. Ultrasonic sensors work over longer distances and handle some surfaces better. Choose based on range and environment.
How accurate are the temperature sensors you stock?
It depends on the family. Digital sensors such as the DS18B20 give good accuracy with a simple one-wire interface; analogue parts such as the LM35 are cheap and linear but need an ADC and careful layout. Always check the accuracy specification over your actual temperature range, not just at 25 C.
