Voltage Regulator Selection Cheat Sheet for Hardware Engineers

Match the regulator to the job

Fixed linear, shunt reference or adjustable — each has a natural home. Use this cheat sheet to pick the topology, then jump to the in-stock part.

Three questions to answer first

  • How much headroom? Gap under ~1.5 V → linear; larger gap at high current → switching.
  • How quiet? Analog/RF rails favour an LDO with good PSRR and low noise (ME6211, RT9193 class).
  • How precise? For a reference or a feedback divider, use a shunt reference such as the TL431 rather than a regulator.

All parts above are in stock in the power management category.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use a TL431 instead of an LDO?

Use the TL431 as a precision shunt reference or in a feedback network; use an LDO when you need to source current to a load.

Which regulator is best for an analog 3.3 V rail?

Choose a low-noise LDO such as the RT9193 or ME6211 and add input/output filtering.

Do you offer adjustable regulators?

Yes — the LM317T covers most bench and variable-rail needs.
