Displays and indicator LEDs are where a product becomes usable, and the driver IC is the part that gets overlooked until the panel will not initialise. This guide covers the driver families we stock and the interface questions that decide the choice.
1. Graphic LCD controllers
For colour TFT panels with a parallel or SPI interface, the controller is usually fixed by the panel and your job is to match it and provide the right level shifting and backlight drive.
| Part | Notes | Link |
|---|---|---|
| ILI9341 | 262K-colour TFT controller, 240x320 class panels | ILI9341 |
2. Monochrome OLED

| SSD1306 | Monochrome OLED controller, 128x64 class, I2C / SPI | SSD1306 |
3. LED matrix and segment drivers
When you need to drive many LEDs from few pins, a dedicated driver handles the multiplexing and current setting for you.
| Part | Notes | Link |
|---|---|---|
| MAX7219CNG | 8-digit 7-segment / 8x8 matrix driver, SPI | MAX7219CNG |
| TM1637 | 7-segment display driver with key scan, 2-wire | TM1637 |
4. Addressable LEDs
Single-wire, individually addressable LEDs. Note the supply current per LED when you size the power rail—full white at high brightness adds up quickly.

|---|---|---|
| WS2812B | Addressable RGB LED with integrated driver | WS2812B |
| SK6812 | Addressable RGB / RGBW LED | SK6812 |
| WS2811 | Addressable LED driver, external LED | WS2811 |
5. Touch and motor drivers often designed in alongside
Panel and indicator designs frequently pair with capacitive touch sensing and small motor drive, so these come up in the same BOM.
| Part | Notes | Link |
|---|---|---|
| TTP223-BA6 | Single-channel capacitive touch switch | TTP223-BA6 |
| TB6612FNG | Dual DC motor driver | TB6612FNG |
| A4988SETTR-T | Stepper motor driver | A4988SETTR-T |
| TMC2208-LA-T | Silent stepper driver | TMC2208-LA-T |
Design checklist
- Identify the exact controller the panel uses before laying out the interface.
- Check logic thresholds both ways and level-shift where the margin is thin.
- For LED matrices, decide early between shift registers, a dedicated driver and addressable LEDs.
- Size the power rail for worst-case LED current, not average.
- Confirm the driver's maximum clock rate against your microcontroller's SPI speed.

Frequently asked questions
Which controller should I use for a small OLED display?
The SSD1306 is the de-facto standard for small monochrome OLED modules and is supported by almost every embedded graphics library. If you are designing your own board, confirm the panel's controller before wiring, because the module you prototype with may differ from the bare panel you buy.
How do I drive a large number of LEDs from one microcontroller?
Two routes. For matrices and segmented displays with moderate counts, cascade 74HC595 shift registers or use a dedicated driver such as the MAX7219. For addressable LED strips, use a part with integrated drive and data handling like the WS2812B, SK6812 or WS2811, which need only one data line.
What is the difference between WS2812B, SK6812 and WS2811?
All three are addressable LED families driven over a single data line. The WS2812B integrates the controller into each RGB LED. The SK6812 is similar and is also widely available in RGBW variants. The WS2811 is the older discrete-controller-plus-LED approach, still used where the LED is separate from the driver.
Do these displays need level shifting?
Often yes. Many controller and driver ICs are 3.3 V parts with logic thresholds that are marginal when driven from 5 V, and some are the reverse. Check the VIH of the receiving device against the VOH of your microcontroller, and level-shift if the margin is small.
