Status indication is one of those details that looks trivial until a batch of boards comes back with mismatched indicators. The KP-1608SYCK from Kingbright is an LED discrete in a 1608 (1.6 mm × 0.8 mm) package — the familiar 0603 size used for power, status and fault indication on dense boards. Getting consistent results is mostly about the series resistor and about understanding binning.
Choosing the series resistor
The calculation is simple but worth doing properly: take your supply voltage, subtract the LED forward voltage at your intended current, and divide by the target current to get the resistance. Two cautions. First, forward voltage is not a single number — it varies with current and with colour, so read the value at the current you plan to run. Second, a small SMD LED has limited power handling, so do not drive it at the top of its range just because the resistor maths allows it.
What to specify when ordering
| Parameter | Why it matters | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Package size | Must match your footprint | 1608 / 0603 as here |
| Colour | Sets forward voltage and appearance | Match across the panel |
| Luminous intensity bin | Controls brightness matching | Specify or buy one batch |
| Quantity and packing | Reel versus cut tape | State it up front |
Assembly notes
Observe polarity — a reversed indicator is the most common assembly fault — and respect the reflow profile for a small plastic package. If you are hand-building prototypes, pre-tin one pad, place with tweezers, then reflow the second end, and work under magnification. For production, reflow assembly is far more consistent than hand placement at this size.
