Overcurrent protection is where a small part prevents a large field-failure problem. The MINISMDC014F-2 from Littelfuse is a resettable PTC fuse — a device that limits current when something goes wrong and recovers afterwards, instead of dying like a one-shot fuse. Choosing one correctly is mostly about the hold and trip currents and about temperature.
Resettable PTC versus a conventional fuse
| Aspect | Resettable PTC | Conventional fuse |
|---|---|---|
| Behaviour on fault | Resistance rises and limits current | Opens permanently |
| After the fault | Recovers when cooled | Must be replaced |
| On-resistance | Higher, adds a small voltage drop | Very low |
| Best fit | Service-free or inaccessible products | Where a hard interrupt is required |
Choosing the rating
Pick a hold current comfortably above your worst-case normal load, so normal operation — including inrush — never trips it. Then confirm that the trip current is low enough that your supply and wiring are protected before the device acts. In practice this means reading both numbers in the datasheet at your operating temperature, not just at room temperature.
Layout and thermal cautions
- Heat changes the trip point. Derate for hot enclosures and outdoor use.
- Mounting matters. Avoid placing it where nearby hot components shift its behaviour unexpectedly.
- Expect recovery time. It must cool before full recovery, so do not assume instant reset.
- Account for the voltage drop. The on-resistance is real and matters in low-voltage rails.
