Millimetre-Wave RF: 60 GHz, 5G mmWave and Radar in a Tight Link Budget

Millimetre-wave radio is where bandwidth and physics collide. By pushing above 24 GHz — into 5G mmWave, 60 GHz Wi-Fi, radar and high-capacity links — designers unlock enormous spectrum, but they also fight a signal that the atmosphere itself tries to absorb. The result is an RF chain where every fraction of a dB of loss is accounted for.

Why mmWave is different

At lower bands, a few decibels of excess loss are tolerable. At 60 GHz, the oxygen absorption peak alone removes signal, and rain, foliage and even the human body block the path. So the link budget is tight, and the RF chain must be as efficient and well matched as possible. Short wavelength does allow very small antennas and beamforming arrays, which is exactly why 5G mmWave and automotive radar use it.

We stock driver and gain-block amplifiers such as the MGA-30889-TR1G and the SBB-3089Z, and low-noise amplifiers like the TQP3M9019 and the SGA-6389Z for up/down-conversion and receive stages.

The conditioning around the module

Many mmWave systems integrate the core transceiver into a module, but the module still needs a clean interface: low-loss switches to route paths or protect the receiver, filters to reject out-of-band energy, and attenuators to calibrate or protect. We supply switches such as the QPC6044TR13 and the SKY13575-639LF, filters such as the LFCN-3800+ low-pass and HFCN-5500+ high-pass, and the PE4302-52 step attenuator.

Radar and sensing

Automotive and industrial radar at 77 GHz and elsewhere rely on the same discipline: a transmit driver builds the pulse, switches and filters shape it, and a low-noise amplifier recovers a faint echo against clutter. The parts that support those stages — gain blocks, low-noise amplifiers, switches, filters — are what we focus on supplying. Frequently asked questions

What is millimetre-wave RF and where is it used?

Millimetre-wave covers roughly 24 to 100+ GHz. It is used for 5G mmWave cellular, 60 GHz Wi-Fi and wireless docking, automotive and radar sensing, and point-to-point links. The short wavelength enables huge bandwidth and tiny antennas, but the signals are absorbed by air, rain and obstacles, so the RF chain must be very efficient and well matched.

Why is the mmWave chain so sensitive to loss?

At tens of gigahertz, every connector, trace and component loss is paid for directly in link budget, and the available output power and receive sensitivity are tighter than at lower bands. Low-loss routing, good matching and efficient amplification become the whole game.

What RF parts are used around mmWave modules?

Many mmWave systems integrate the core into modules, but the surrounding conditioning still needs driver and gain-block amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, low-loss switches, filters and attenuators for up/down conversion, calibration and protection. These discretes are what keep the module's interface clean.

Can you supply RF parts for mmWave-adjacent designs?

Yes. We stock driver and gain-block amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, RF switches, filters and step attenuators commonly referenced in millimetre-wave-adjacent and conversion-stage designs. Send the part numbers and quantity for a quote.
