A half-bridge is the heart of most power conversion — motor drives, DC-DC converters, inverters — but driving its high-side switch safely is not trivial. The Si8244BB-D-IS1R from Silicon Labs is an isolated gate driver built for exactly this: it takes a logic signal from your controller and delivers a fast, isolated gate drive to MOSFETs and IGBTs.
Why isolation is not optional
In a half-bridge the high-side gate sits at the bus potential and swings with it. A non-isolated drive would let that voltage reach your controller, and the fast dv/dt would inject noise and risk. Galvanic isolation bridges the high-voltage gap while keeping the low-voltage side safe and quiet.
What the Si8244 does
- Peak drive current. Around 4 A switches the gate quickly, cutting switching loss and heating.
- Isolation rating. A high galvanic-isolation figure lets it sit across the bus voltage safely.
- Under-voltage lockout. If the drive supply sags, the gate is held off so a half-on switch cannot burn.
- Dead-time control. Prevents both sides conducting at once (shoot-through), the classic bridge killer.
Completing the stage
Drive an IGBT such as the HGTG30N60A4 or a MOSFET, feed the bus from a rectifier built around a Schottky such as the A180WA, and keep the high-voltage loop tight. Verify dead-time against your real switching speed before applying full power.
