Smart High-Side & Load Switches for Automotive and Industrial

Switching a load sounds trivial until the load is a cold incandescent bulb that draws ten times its rated current at turn-on, or a solenoid that kicks back a violent voltage spike. In automotive and industrial systems, the smart high-side switch is the hardened component that handles exactly these realities — and reports back when something breaks.

What "smart" buys you

A smart high-side switch puts a protected power MOSFET, its driver, and diagnostic logic in one package, on the positive rail. It survives short-circuits, limits inrush, and tells the microcontroller whether the load is present, over-temperature or shorted. Parts such as the BTS723GW and the BTS50085 are commonly referenced for multi-channel high-side switching, while half-bridge and motor drivers such as the BTS7970B and the BTN8982TA handle bidirectional loads.

Why not just a MOSFET?

A discrete MOSFET needs a gate driver, a freewheel diode, a current-sense resistor and external protection — and none of it talks to the controller. In a car or a factory, you want the switch to say "channel 2 is shorted" rather than silently fail. That diagnostic capability is why smart switches dominate these applications.

Inductive loads and the spike

Motors, solenoids and relays store energy and release it as a voltage spike when switched off. The smart switch's integrated clamp absorbs it; a bare MOSFET without a proper freewheel path will not survive long. We supply the smart switches and the motor drivers together so the whole switching stage is sourced as a set.

Sourcing for a long-lived supply chain

Automotive-grade parts go on allocation regularly. Browse the power management chip range or send us your high-side switch and motor-driver line items; we quote stock, date code and inspection options so a module build is not exposed to a single allocated channel.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smart high-side switch?

A smart high-side switch integrates a power MOSFET with driver, protection and diagnostics in one package, placed on the positive rail. It replaces a discrete MOSFET plus a pile of support parts, and it can report faults like over-current, over-temperature and open-load back to the controller.

Where are they used?

Automotive body and powertrain modules, industrial PLC outputs, and any system that needs to switch lamps, motors, heaters or solenoids safely. They are the standard way to drive resistive, inductive and incandescent loads in harsh environments.

Why use a smart switch instead of a discrete MOSFET?

Because a discrete MOSFET needs a gate driver, freewheel diode, current sense and protection around it, and none of that reports faults. A smart switch bundles all of it, survives short-circuits and tells the MCU what went wrong — which is exactly what automotive and industrial reliability demands.

Can you supply smart switches and motor drivers?

Yes. We stock high-side and half-bridge drivers, and motor driver ICs commonly referenced in automotive and industrial power switching. Send the exact part numbers and quantity for a quote.
