Replacing an Op-Amp: Package, Pinout and Layout Compatibility Checklist

After the electrical parameters, the substitution question usually comes down to something more mundane: will the part physically fit, and will the board work with it in place? Package and pinout compatibility is the last mile of every op-amp replacement, and it is where a promising cost-down quietly turns into a stencil change and a layout revision.

Package: same name, different footprint

Package codes are not as standardised as they look. SOIC-8 exists in narrow-body and wide-body versions with different body widths; TSSOP and MSOP have different pitches; SOT-23-5 and SC70 are frequently confused. Always confirm three dimensions before assuming a footprint match: body width, lead pitch and overall lead span.

PackageTypical channelsWatch out for
SOT-23-5 / SC70-5SinglePin 1 orientation and body size differ between vendors
SOIC-8 / SOP-8Single or dualNarrow vs wide body, different pinouts per channel count
MSOP-8 / TSSOP-8DualFiner pitch — stencil and paste volume matter
SOP-14 / TSSOP-14QuadPin 4 and pin 11 as supply pins is the common convention
SOIC-8 with thermal padSingle/dual powerPad present or absent changes the footprint entirely

Pinout: single, dual and quad are different animals

This is the most common source of substitution errors. Inside one op-amp family, the same physical package carries different functions depending on how many channels it holds:

  • In a single op-amp SOT-23-5, the usual arrangement is output, supply, input and a shutdown or null pin.
  • In a dual op-amp SOIC-8, channel A typically sits on the pins next to the output and channel B is mirrored, with the supply pins shared.
  • In a quad op-amp SOP-14, the outputs and inputs are interleaved and the supply pins are in the middle of the device.

Consequently a datasheet cross-reference is only valid within the same channel count and package. Reading the pinout diagram of the candidate part — not the part it claims to replace — is non-negotiable.

Layout: what a faster part changes

Even with an identical footprint and pinout, three layout factors can turn a working board into a marginal one:

  • Decoupling. A faster amplifier draws current in shorter, sharper bursts. Keep the bypass capacitor at the pin, and check that the ground return is short.
  • The feedback node. Keep it as small as possible, particularly on high-impedance and high-gain stages, where stray capacitance at the inverting input costs phase margin.
  • Output routing. A longer trace to a connector or ADC is extra capacitance, which is the load condition that reduces stability margin.

A substitution checklist you can run in ten minutes

CheckPass condition
Channel count and package codeIdentical, including body width
PinoutVerified from the candidate's own datasheet
Supply pinsSame pins, and supply range covers your rail
ThermalDissipation within the package rating for your copper area
Lead finish and MSLCompatible with your assembly process
Decoupling and feedback layoutNo change needed, or change identified and costed
Load and cableStability verified with the real load

Every one of these items costs minutes to check and, if skipped, can cost a production run. Our advice is to keep the checklist next to the cross-reference table and treat it as a gate: a substitution that fails any line is not a substitution, it is a design change with a design change's cost.
