Modern radio hardware mixes high-voltage reality with delicate signals: a 50 V PA rail, a mains-powered supply, a control MCU running 3.3 V logic, and a measurement chain that must not inject ground loops into a phase-noise measurement. Digital isolators move logic signals across that barrier using tiny on-chip transformers — no optocoupler ageing, no LED drive, microsecond-to-nanosecond class timing, and multi-kilovolt isolation ratings in millimetre-scale packages. This article covers where isolation belongs in RF systems, how the technology has evolved, and the domestic parts now stocked against the import anchors.

Application logic: where isolation belongs in an RF system

  • PA bias and gate-drive control: the controller talks to circuits riding the PA drain supply; isolation breaks the shared ground that would otherwise couple PA transients into logic and measurement grounds.
  • Instrumentation and test: isolating the control interface of a device under test keeps bench ground loops out of low-level RF measurements — a phase-noise or noise-figure setup can be ruined by one ground loop.
  • Remote units and towers: outdoor radios and antenna controllers face lightning-induced surges; isolation plus surge protection (see our ESD-adjacent coverage in the test-system hygiene article) is standard field practice.
  • Isolated data buses: RS-485 and CAN links into RF cabinets are routinely isolated at the transceiver boundary.
  • Isolated power companions: push-pull transformer drivers pair with the isolator to carry power across the same barrier.

Datasheet parameters that decide success

Look past the isolation voltage headline. Working voltage (VIOWM) is what the barrier survives continuously; transient immunity (CMTI) in kV/µs decides survival near fast-switching PA rails; propagation delay and pulse-width distortion set timing accuracy across the barrier; common-mode transient rejection stops the PA's dV/dt from flipping the receiver; and power consumption per channel matters in remote units. Medical-adjacent and mains-referenced designs additionally care about reinforced-insulation ratings and creepage/clearance per package.

New technology

On-chip microtransformer isolation (pioneered by the iCoupler approach) has largely displaced optocouplers in new designs: no LED wear-out, tighter channel-to-channel matching, integrated DC-DC converters that move power and data in one package, and multi-channel parts that carry SPI or UART buses whole. Domestic vendors now ship credible families across the whole span — our shelves carry the 3PEAK part cross-referenced to the ADuM1200 single-channel 2.5 kV isolator and NOVOSENSE dual-channel parts cross-referenced to ADuM1200/1201, alongside Skyworks' SI86 family (the Silicon Labs heritage line) that anchors the import side.

Domestic alternatives: families and indicative cost

Stocked anchors: import side, the SI8640BD-B-ISR (four-channel isolator) and SI8663BD-B-ISR (six-channel, default-high) from the SI86 family; domestic side, TPT7720-SO1R (3PEAK, ADuM1200-class single channel) and NSi8220N0-DSPR / NSi8221N0-DSPR (NOVOSENSE dual channels with default-low/default-high options). For the isolated-power companion role, the SN6501/6505-class transformer drivers have direct domestic equivalents in COS6501, COS6505B and COSN6505C (COSINE), and the isolated bus tier is represented by SIT65HVD230DR against the SN65HVD230 3.3 V CAN transceiver.

Price figures below are indicative public-market reference ranges for moderate volumes, compiled from publicly observable listings. Digital isolation is one of the cleanest substitution categories in this batch: domestic parts carry public cross-references to the import anchors at 70–85% cost reduction. Qualify on CMTI against your own PA transients — that is the parameter datasheet tables most often understate in real switch-node environments.

Qualification flow

Run the candidate across the barrier at your real data rate and measure propagation delay and pulse-width distortion at temperature extremes; superimpose the actual PA switching transients through a coupling network and confirm the receiver does not toggle; and if the barrier carries mains-referenced or user-touchable circuits, insist on the insulation standard documentation for your target market.

Frequently asked questions

Digital isolator or optocoupler for a new design?

Digital, unless legacy compatibility or a special certification forces otherwise: no LED ageing, tighter timing, lower power, and multi-channel integration in one package.

What does CMTI actually protect against?

Fast common-mode transients across the barrier, for example a PA drain node stepping 50 V in nanoseconds. If the receiver's input structure trips, the data stream corrupts; CMTI in kV/microsecond quantifies the margin.

Can one isolator package also supply isolated power?

Yes — newer families integrate DC-DC converters that transfer power across the same transformer barrier, useful for isolated gate-drive and sensor nodes.

Are domestic isolators certified like the import parts?

Vendors such as 3PEAK and NOVOSENSE publish insulation standard compliance for their families. Request the certification package that matches your target market before design-in.
